TRANSIENT AND USELESS WAKEFULNESS (VERSE NO. 27-28)

A scenery of the consequences of their deeds are revealed to them, so that they might wake up of their negligent sleep, before it is too late.

When they are confronted with the blazing fire which is the inevitable consequence of their conducts, then they tremble with fear and wake up, but too late. They declare their wish for return and amendment, but they are still liars! Even if they could come back here once again, they would do the same. Man's acts and deed will incarnate in the life to come, and he can see there what he has done here! His deception and evils which he used to practise on his people, will be personified and made clear to his own eyes! And woe unto us when we see the ugly and dreadful figure of our evil deeds which is made out of a blazing fire!

Here a few notes are worthy of further consideration:

1- The verses imply that they have been concealing a series of facts, not only from other people, but from themselves too! Then the concealed facts and figures have been made clear and manifest in their sight and to all other! It is not so strange or uncommon that some people may cover their consicence, and seal their hearts and close their eyes and ears on the facts that they want to get rid of them! They put their finger in their ears against the thunder claps, to avoid hearing and feeling the existing hazards. Such people's falsity is not due to their want of knowledge, but to their perversity and selfishness. It also might be due to the disease that is in their minds and hearts. These are the ones who decieve their own conscience.

2- The verse implies that even if they go back to the material world once again, they would commit the very things which they were forbidden!

There are many people that, when they see the bad consequences of their deeds, will temporally wake up, and even think of amendment; but their wakefulness is transient and ineffective. They are just like the idolaters who, when afflicted with the calamity of storm when they sail, they forget their idols and earnestly pray to Allah for help and rescue; but as soon as they reach the bank safe and secure, they return to their idols and idolatry!

3- The above mentioned condition is of course not common to all the unbelievers, and is special to a certain minority of them. This is because the prophet was warning and advising the majority of them with the hope of guiding them to the straight path of God and truth.
