Verses 37-39Verses 33-36

Here the argument applies to the best man in speech in the sight of Islam, in an interrogative mood:-

``And whose word is better than him who calls others to share his faith in Allah, and does righteous deeds, and declares himself to be a Moslem?''

In other word; the best man is the man who believes in God, and calls all men to share his faith in God. His law of life is the will of God, and he knows no Lord other than Allah. There is not any difference between his word and his conduct. Through his self-restraint and faith, he may reach the highest position that man is merited to reach. They will resist any kind of Satanic temptation, by seeking refuge in the Merciful God.

Some commentators have attributed the above qualities to our prophet. This is true; but in general sense of meaning, all those who call people to monotheism, an who have submitted to the will of God, and do righteous deeds, are good examples of those qualified by the verse. (NO.33)

The Arabic, ``HASANEH'' in the verse NO.34 will include all kinds of goodness, and the word, ``SAYYE-AH'' includes all kinds of evil and badness, but here the goodness may exclusively mean Monotheism and the Oneness of God, which is the source of all goodnesses and beauties. The opposite word to Monotheism is polytheism, which is the primary source of all kinds of evil deeds, and the two are of course not equal.

As to the phrase, ``Repel evil deeds with a good or better'' (in verse NO.34). it in fact is a high ethical action which can easily turn a foe to a friend:-

Those who stand against harshness; with overlook and forgiveness, they are always the winners. This method is the best way to remove the hatred, ill will and enmity. Such has always been the methodical way of our prophet.

At the conquest of Mecca, when Quraish and all the Pagan Arabs were defeated, and had to submit; a few Moslems raised up a slogan, saying:-

``TODAY IS THE DAY OF VENGEANCE.''

When the prophet heard that; he urgently sent Imam Ali (AS) to take the banner of Islam out of their hands, and to change their slogan to such:-

``TODAY IS THE DAY OF MERCY AND FORGIVENESS''

After that the prophet declared a General Amnesty.
