HE IS HAKEEM AND HAMEEDHE IS WISE AND ALL-KNOWING

We find another attribute in the fourth verse and that is the word “Tawab” has been used with “Hakeem” It is said, “You would have been severely punished had he not bestowed his grace upon you and verily He is wise and accepts repentance.”

This verse is placed after the verse of “la’an” and this means that when one man accuses his wife of being shameless and adultery and does not have four witnesses to prove his accusation then he should be lashed 80 times under the law of false allegations. But Qura’n has absolved such a person if he swears time by the name of God as has been prescribed in the Surah Noor.

In such an instance the accusation will stand proven against his wife but if she also swears five times by the name of God then she too will be absolved but the couple will be separated from each other for life time. We find that the meanings of the two words are compatible with this verse because the path of repentance is opened for these men and women because if one has accused the other falsely then he or she after being punished as per the law will establish a relationship of adultery. The other angle is that the men and women are fully aware of each other’s condition and in such a condition it is not possible to bring proof. This is why God through has issued His decree regarding “la’an” to protect theirs and the children’s rights and to protect the couple from all kinds of evil.

(The details for this can be seen in the book on Feqh in the chapter on La’an.)
