“Justice is the scale”The Witnesses on the Day of Judgment.

Sheikh Mufid says:

““Mizan” does not mean the scales that we have in this world. But the stagnant minds have taken it to be so. The Hadiths tell us that Hazrat Ali and his progeny who are the Imams of their times will be the criterion for judging the deeds and they are the ones who will differentiate between the deeds and their merits.” (1)

But some commentators have not accepted this idea for they believe that the scales on the Day of Judgment will be like the scales on this earth. The human deeds will have a weight. Their books of deeds will be heavy and they will be weighed.

The late Allama Majlisi says:

“We have a general belief on the scale and we do not know the details about it.”(2)

A point to note is that the apostle David prayed to God to be shown the scale. And God did so. The two sides of the scale covered the entire east and west so when he saw it he was flabbergasted and swooned. On coming back to his senses he asked “My God! Who can fill the sides with good deeds?” The answer was “O David! I fill them as a reward for a single date that a person spends in My way!” Please the read the words of the hadith. (3)

In one hadith Imam Sadiq is reported to have said on being asked about the “Mizan”:
