The fear of God or His justice, the accounting of deeds and the fear of punishment serves as a shield against sins and is a great deterrent for sins. This is why it is called a key of Paradise. Verse 46 of Surah Rahman says:

“And for him who fears the time of standing before his Lord are two gardens.”

Two things have been mentioned in explaining the term “Maqaama Rabbihi”. It is firstly said that it means that God encompasses all deeds and intentions of a human being and secondly that it means the standing of a person before God on the Day of Judgment but then some words will have to be taken as understood and it will be said, “ Maqaama beni yadah rabbih” (1)

Which ever explanation you take this kind of fear is the cause of giving up all kinds of sins and carnal desires. Imam Sadiq is reported to have said in a hadith;

“He who knows that God is watching him and all that he is saying and if this knowledge restrains him from sins then he will deserve two gardens in Paradise.” (2)

Some Tafsirs have mentioned two gardens (Jannataan) e.g.

It means the material and spiritual gardens according to verse 15 of Surah Al Imran that says:

“(Gardens) underneath which the rivers flow and God will be pleased with them.”

The first bounty is the gardens of Paradise under which the rivers flow and second is the pleasure of God.

The first garden is due to the true belief and the second is due to the good deeds.

The first garden is due to obedience and the second for giving up sins.

The first garden is the reward for deeds and the second as the gift from God.

None of these explanations has any valid proof but the first one is the most appropriate. It is permissible to copulate in them.
