We find composite and final features of the sinners in Hell in the Qura’n and one among them is “Crime and sin”.

Verse 86 of Surah Maryam says:

“We shall drive the sinners to Hell in a thirsty state (like the way the herd is taken to water)”

The word “Mujrim” is derived from “Jurm” means to cut or sever and is used for; cutting down trees or harvesting its fruits. This word is used for the sinners because through their sins and defiance they sever all connections with God and His beneficence. Does the verse say that every sin will be the cause of going to Hell or is this verse related to some specific sinners and criminals? Literally the verse includes all but from other verses we surmise that it refers to the sins committed with blatant disbelief and dishonesty.

Verse 74 of Surah Zukhruf says:

“Verily the criminals will be in the torment of Hell for ever”

It is certain that only the disbelievers will remain forever in Hell and not all sinners. Verses 40 to 42 of Surah Mudaththir say:

“ In the garden then will talk to each other and ask the sinners, “ what made you enter Hell?” and they will answer, “ We were not among those who offered daily prayers and we never fed the poor.”

So the enumerated their own sins and one of which was that they denied the Day of Judgment. There are other verses about this kind of sin (1) It is also said that the verse may be talking about those who are totally immersed in sin and do not deserve to be pardoned by God for such people will generally go to Hell.

1. See verses 40, 84 and 133 of Surah A’raf, 12 and 87 of Surah Hijr, 21 of Surah Furqaan and 69 of Surah Naml in which the disbelievers have been called sinners like the enemies of the apostles of God, the people of Lot and the Pharaoh.
