The Qura’nic des c r i p tions of HellConclusion

The Hell undoubtedly is the center of God’s wrath and chastisement both spiritual and physical. Those who limit it to just spiritual or symbolic punishment will have to neglect a great number of the Qura’nic verses or deny them and then resort to baseless interpretations.

The question is “What is the truth about Hell?” What will be the condition of its scourges and punishments? The best way to know about it is to the various names and attributed given to it in the Qura’n so that we may unravel the mystery about this center of God’s punishments. We have earlier said that no matter how vast we think our knowledge of the hereafter is, it is still limited for we have only a vague view of it and its features are not clear to us because the hereafter is a world superior to this world and can be compared to the infant in the mother’s womb who has no idea of the world outside.

It is impossible for us in this world to have a complete knowledge about it but this cannot prevent us from having a vague and scanty knowledge. To know the truth about Hell we will have to study the various verses of the Qura’n. We now study the under mentioned verses that describe some names and feature of Hell.

Verses 43 and 44 of Surah Hijr:

“Hell shall be the abode for all of them; it has seven gates.”

Verses 26 to 29 of Surah Mudaththir:

“Soon I will throw him in Hell and what do you know what Hell is? It leaves out none nor does it spare and shrivels the human body.”

Verse 24 of Surah Baqarah:

“Then guard yourselves against the fire whose fuel shall be the people and stones prepared for the disbelievers”

Verse 7 of Surah Shura:

“A party shall be in the garden and a party shall be in Hell.’

Verses 37 to 39 of Surah Naaziat:

“As for him who has transgressed the bounds and preferred the life of this world, then verily his abode shall be Hell.”

Verses 4 to 7 of Surah Humaza:

“No! He will be flung into the crushing fire (Hutama) and what do you know what Hutama is? It is a fire that God has kindled and shall mount above the hearts.”

Verses 8 to 11 of Surah Qaariah:

“And has for him whose deeds are light; his home shall be a burning abyss and what do know about it? It is a fire blazing fiercely.”

Verses 15 to 17 of Surah Maarij:

“Never! Verily it is the flaming of Hell fire dragging the scalp claiming him who turned his back and went away.”
