The Scattering The Raising

“Hashr” is another word that has been used frequently in the Qura’n and in the verse under discussion God says, “And verily your Lord will gather them together; He is all-wise all-knowing.”

Wisdom says that everything should not be terminated after a person’s death or else the worldly life, sleep, eating, dressing and drinking are something ordinary compared to the immense university for which man has been created. God’s knowledge demands that the resurrection, gathering and scattering of people for their accounts (the gathering of the soil to recreate men and their deeds) will have no obstacles because He is knows and is aware of everything.

“Hashr” has been used nearly 30 times for the Day of Reckoning in Qura’n’s verses and this greatness of use depicts its importance. According to Maqayis “Hashr’ means to gather as well as to move or to shake. It is often used to denote gathering in various manners. According to Mafuradat it also denotes the movement of troops from their barracks to the battlefield. There is a tradition that says, “Women are never taken to the battlefield.”

The Book At-Tahqiq says that the word has been derived from “Ba’ath” “Sauq” and “Jamaa’”

Insect means the tiny creatures and it is because of their movement and numbers that they are called “Hashratol Ardh”

This explanation has been used for the Day of Reckoning and resurrection because all people born on this earth will be gathered on that day for the accounting of their deeds and then they will be moved to Paradise or Hell. On the day on God’s order all those who died and are scattered all over the world and the sea and air will be gathered and their souls will return in them. Not only they but their deeds too will be accumulated with them. Therefore, the Day of Reckoning is the day of gathering.

We learn from some traditions that only the living beings of earth but all the skies will be gathered and this is why it is also called the day of the meeting which is one of the names of Qiyamah. It has been mentioned in verse 15 of Surah Mumin. Imam Jafar Sadiq spoke on it and said, “This is the day when the people of the skies will meet the people of the earth.” (1)
