The Day of RewardsThe Last Day

“Yom-ol-Hisaab” is one of the most famous names and it has come 5 times in the verses of the Qura’n. The reason for this name is that all the deeds of mankind will be taken into account without exception, whether they are big or small, part or full, spiritual or materialistic, physical or spiritual.

In verse 27 of Surah Mumin the Qura’n speaks through Moses bin Imran and says, “ Moses said to the people of the Pharaoh: “ Indeed I take refuge with my Lord and yours from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.”

It has also been called “The day when the accounts will be taken” like in verse 41 of Surah Ibrahim that says, “Lord Forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day when the reckoning shall be set up.”

Maqayis-ol-Loghat has talked about 4 basics for the term “Hisab” or accounts which are counting, to be enough, “Hasban” which means a small pillow and “Ahsab” a person whose skin has become white and whose hair has fallen. Some linguists have given more meanings and up to 7 of them and one of them is rewards and punishment. (1)

But all these meanings as explained by Raghib revert to one meaning and that is to take accounts and if this word is used for sufficiency then an accounting is necessary to reach it. It is used for rewards and punishments because after such an accounting one reaches finality. Other meanings also revert to this (e.g. it is used for a specific disease because it is similar to the punishment of God which occurs after accounting. The small pillow is called “Husban” because the accountant uses it at work.

The definite work which will take place on the Day of Judgment will be accounting by God. This will be explained Inshallah in the stages of the hereafter when we discuss it.
