The Day of Resurrection (Meeting)The Day of Mutual Loss

This name too has come only once in the Qura’n in verse 32 of Surah Mumin and it say that when the Believer from the People of the Pharaoh was admonishing them he said, “O My people! Verily I fear for you the day when there will be mutual calling.”

The word “Tanad” was actually “Tanadi” but the “Ya” was removed. This word is derived from the word “Nida” which means to call out.

Many of the commentators opine that the Day of Calling is one of the names of the Day of Judgment.

Some say the reason for this name is that that the people of the Paradise and Hell will call out to each other. Those of Hell will say: Give us something from the water of Paradise or the bounty that God has given to you. The answer as defined in verse 50 of Surah A’raf is “God has forbidden both to the disbelievers.”

Imam Jafar Sadiq is quoted in a Hadith in “Ma’ani-ol-Akhbar” to have said:

“Some say that the reason for giving it this name is that the people will call out to each other for help on the Day of Judgment.”

The name has been kept because the angels will call the humans for accounts and they in turn will call out to the angels for help.

Or because the believers when they see their book of deeds will cry out as specified in verse 19 of Surah Haqqah: “Take, read my record”

While verse 25 of the same Surah describes what the disbelievers will wail when they are handed their book of deeds: “Had I not been given my record!”

Of course there are other reasons for this. Some commentaries have enlisted 8 reasons but some in them are weak. The other point is that it is possible that all these meanings may be included in the verse because they are not contradictory to each other.

1. According to Fakhruddin Razi in his Tafsir there is a unanimous consent among the Ulema regarding this.
