The Day when hearts and eyes will be horror stricken The Day when eyes will stare in horrorThe Day when secrets will be judged. The Day when all will come out from the graves.

These two attributes are about the same truth but in different perspectives. They contain the facts about the Great Day which make the hearts and bodies tremble and impel mankind to reflect deeply.

Verse 40 of Surah Naba says:

“The Day when man will see (the deeds) that his hands have sent forth.” Since it was very disquieting for some commentators to speak about man seeing the deeds he has done in this world, some commentators have explained it as “Yantizur” instead of “Yanzur” and said that this means that man will wait for the rewards of his deeds on that Day and some times have spoken about discerning the result of the deeds instead of seeing the deeds.

The reason for this is that the commentators of those times had given very little thought to the physical manifestation of the deeds otherwise such misled interpretations were not necessary because Qura’n says, “Man will see what his hands have sent forth”. This means that that the deeds that are seemingly unseen have not been destroyed for they will re-live and manifest in proper forms. Not only the person concerned but everyone in that Day’s gathering will see them and this meaning is more vivid in verse 49 of Surah Kahf that says:

“And they will find all that they did.”

The second verse 30 of Surah Al Imran says the same thing”

“ On the Day when every person will be confronted with all the good and evil that he has done, he will wish that there is a great distance between him and his evil.”

It should be noted that Tabrisi explains this verse in Majmaul Bayan as:

“Since the deeds of men cannot be reverted and are destroyed after they take place so it is not possible for them to return.”

He then speaks of another explanation after saying this. The presence of the book of deeds and the presence of the rewards and punishments but as we have said in an earlier commentary: The deeds of men are like a force like all other forces and keep existing by changing their form; they are destroyed.”

We have also said that it is scientifically possible for matter to change into energy and energy to change into matter so nothing can prevent the deeds from existing and change into matter on that day with each deed manifesting itself in a proper form. This verse is one of the miracles of knowledge in the Qura’n because no one knew this at the time of its revelation. We know this because of scientific declaration of this time.

The Islamic traditions have repeatedly spoken about purgatory and the manifestation of the deeds but I do not know why the attention of the commentators was not drawn to it. It may be that they consider the deeds to be finite and believed that they would be destroyed but considered their infinity to be wrong. Today we know that this assumption is totally unreliable ( We will further elaborate on this when we discuss the physical manifestation of deeds)
