Since these verses will be explained when we deal with the witnesses of the Day of Judgment we will only briefly study them now and will discuss only how they prove the physical resurrection. After the sealing of the mouths, the inactiveness of the tongue, the witness given by the body parts and the ultimate fate is mentioned for the first time.

Indeed this issue is compatible only with the physical resurrection because there is no scope for the hands and legs or tongue or mouths in spiritual resurrection.

The second and third verses tell us that the flesh and eyes to will give witness about the deeds they were used for.

It is possible that the witness may be in way that God grants them speech or they do it tacitly, because the eyes, limbs and flesh record the deeds in them and on the day of disclosure everything will be revealed. (Its explanation Inshallah will be given in the chapter about the witnesses of the Judgment Day.

The fourth verse speaks about those who book of records will be given in their right hands ( because of the piety and success) and they will raise their heads high in glory inviting others to see their records and those whose records will be given in their left hands because of their evil deeds will wail “

Alas! We wish that we were never given our records”

The verse points not only to the body parts but mentions the left and right hands.

The fifth verse speaks about the radiant faces of the pious and the darkened faces of the sinners and this too is a proof of physical resurrection.

There are others verses in the Qura’n about this which speak about the shackles and the chains that will be put on their necks, hands and legs. (Surah Ibrahim 43 and Dahr 4)

There are verses that describe the conditions of the body parts and the laughter of the pious on the condition of the sinners. Verse 34 of Surah

Mutaffifin says:

“But this Day those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers.”

Then there are those verses that speak about the horrors of the day that will freeze the eyes in pity and terror, the necks will be stiff, and the heads will be raised to the heavens and the effect of the awe will be such that they will not bat their eyelids.

Verses 42 and 43 of Surah Ibrahim say:

“Do not think God to be heedless of what the unjust ones do. He only gives them respite till the Day when the eyes will stare fixedly 43 as they come running with horror, their heads upraised, and their sight not returning to them and their hearts empty.

Some verses speak of the Day when the unjust will be eating their fingers in great remorse. Verse 27 of Surah Furqan says:

“And remember the Day when the unjust will bite his hands and say, “O would that I had been guided by the Messenger.”

Can we attribute these verses to symbolic interpretation and ignore the truth that the words portray?
