The story of Noah tells us about the time when there was a storm and deluge and the earth was soaked with rain so much so that water flooded over all lands. His son was about to drown because he was not a believer which was the primary condition to board the ark, so Noah looked up at the sky and said as described in verse 45 of Surah Huod:

“Lord! My son is of my family and verily your promise is true, and you are the most just of the judges.”

What is meant is that god had made a covenant for the safety of his family but god spoke to him warningly as in Verse 46 of Surah Huod:

“O Noah! Indeed he is not of your family.”

Why did you ask for something which is not in your knowledge and Noah was apologetic and said as in verse 47 of Surah Huod?

“Lord! I seek refuge in you from asking you that of which I have no knowledge. I shall be among the losers unless you forgive and have mercy on me.’

Noah admitted that he had asked something of which he had no knowledge and asked for forgiveness and mercy for he says he would be among the losers if he is not forgiven.

A Question:

How can he attain infallibility even after he had asked for forgiveness and mercy?

The Answer:

We should first understand the nature of the mistake was it a sin or an oversight?

Indeed God had admonished Noah about asking for the salvation of the idolaters who were about to be drowned. Verse 37 of Surah Huod says:

“And do not invoke me for those who did wrong; they will surely drown.”

Did Noah know that his son would be counted among the disbelievers? According to some commentators his son had hid his belief like the children who profess innocence in front of their parents but the truth is something else.

The verse 40 of Surah Huod says:

“We said, “Bring upon the Ark two of each kind and your family, except him against whom the word has already gone forth.”(1)

Noah thought that his son deserved to be saved as per the covenant of God so he pleaded as in verse 45 of Surah Huod:

“Lord! Verily my son is of my family and your promise certainly is true. You are the most just of all judges.”

This incidence does not describe any sin on Noah’s part but only any oversight; and he should have only known the details about his son’s belief before he prayed to God. He called out to his son as in verse 42 of Surah Huod:

“O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers.”

Noah did not consider his son as disbeliever but one who mixed with them.

Some people have opined that Noah was aware of the disbelief of his son but he prayed to God because of his great love for him (He was afraid of the deluge and that is a normal reaction of any mankind)

Her became aware of the abhorrence of god and gave his excuse for this oversight.

1. It is possible that this may be referring to the verse 37 of Surah Huod. The previous verses are also debatable as it said “And do not address me for the wrongdoers” but research tells us that his wife had also joined the disbelievers or was one of the disbelievers but he did not pray for her salvation
