Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
verses 1-4verses 28-29

OCCASION OF REVELATION
The Messenger of God sent JAFFAR-IBN-ABITALIB, in accompany with seventy Moslims on an emigration to ABYSSINIA=Ethiopia. JAFFAR entered the court of Negus, and invited him to accept Islam. The king accepted and converted. Then 40 men of the Abyssinians asked JAFFAR to take them to the prophet to declare their conversion, and to learn of himwhat was to be done. They also brought their wealth to Medina and shared it with their Moslim brothers. To this effect, the verses;S-28:52-4 revealed:-
``Those to whom We gave the Book before it, they believe in it (i.e. the QURAN) and when it is recited to them, they say:-`We believe in it, that it is the truth from our Lord. We were submitters before it was revealed through Mohammad.''
Then a group of Christians who believed not in Islam said:-
``O, Moslims! According to the above verse(NO. 28), those Christians who have believed, will have a double share of God's Grace and Mercy. Therefore, if we do not believe, we still will have one share as you have, and we are equal to you in advantages. However, they were wrong in their assertion, because those Christians who believed in Islam, had a twofold rewards for having faith in Mohammad as well as those prophets who were before him. So is the case with a Moslim, for having faith in his own prophet, as well as all the other prophets who were sent aforetime.
BELIEVERS WITH DOUBLE SHARE
VERSE NO. 28-29
Most of the commentators have understood the immediate reference to have been to the Christians who believed the new revelation from God. They could see the QurÌn the true and unperverted version of the previous revelations, and therefore believed in Allah and in Mohammad as the Truthful Messenger of God, and walked in the new light.
So their previous merits are recognized by Islam, and they would have equal terms in the new religious society too. Their share of reward will have a twofold aspect. In other word, all the wrongs that they may have done through ignorance or by mistakes in their previous religion will be forgiven them in the new light in which they walk. They have one reward for their faith in their previous prophets such as Moses and Jesus, and another reward for believing in the Last and the Seal of prophets.
Part of their reward is the new light of faith in which they can walk safely, and the next part of their reward will be God's forgiveness and blotting out their sins.
The ending of this chapter implies that no one or no group or race, will have exclusive possession of God's Grace. The Grace is entirely controlled and bestowed by Him according to His wise and Merciful General Plan. Neither can anyone other than God blot out the effects of a sin.
