The Love of ÝAlÐ (Ýa) in the Hearts of the Believers
Who is the 96th verse of Surah Maryam referring to?
The 96th verse of Surah Maryam mentions: “Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds—the All-beneficent will endear them [to His creation].” In many of the books of tradition and commentary of the Ahl al-Sunnah (in addition to those of the Shia) there are repeated traditions in regards to the revelation of this verse from the Prophet (Ò). These traditions show that this verse was revealed in regards to Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa). Amongst these narrations are the following: ÝAllÁmah ZamakhsharÐ in his KashshÁf, SibÔ ibn JawzÐ in his Tadhkirah, GanjÐ ShÁfiÝÐ, QurÔubÐ in his famous commentary, MuÎib al-DÐn ÓabarÐ in his DhakhÁÞir al-ÝUqbÁ, NayshÁbÙrÐ in his famous commentary, Ibn ÑabbÁgh MÁlikÐ in his FuÒÙl al-Muhimmah, SuyÙÔÐ in his Durr al-ManthÙrr, HaythamÐ in his ÑawÁÞiq al-MuÎriqah, and ÀlÙsÐ in his RÙÎ al-MaÝÁnÐ. This shows that these traditions are quite large in number and well represented in a vast variety of books. Now let us look in to detail in to the content of these traditions:
1- ThaÝlabÐ in his commentary has narrated from BarraÞ ibn ÝÀzib that the Prophet (Ò) said to ÝAlÐ (Ýa): Say oh my Lord, appoint a covenant for me amongst yourself and place my love within the hearts of the believers. It was at this time that the verse: “Indeed those who have faith…” was revealed. The very same tradition (or traditions with very slight differences) can be found in many other books.
2- In many books, it has been narrated from Ibn ÝAbbÁs that he said: The verse of “Indeed those who have faith…” was revealed in regards to ÝAlÐ ibn AbÐ ÓÁlib (Ýa) and the meaning of the verse is that God has placed his love in the hearts of the believers.
3- In the book ÑawÁÞiq, it has been narrated from MuÎammad ibn ÍanafÐyah in the commentary of this verse that: No believer can be found except that he has the love of ÝAlÐ and his family in his heart.
4- In a authentic narration from Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa) it has been narrated that: If I was to take this sword and strike a believer with it in order that he hates me, he would not do so and if I was to take the entire world (and all of its blessings) and give it to a hypocrite in order that he loves me, he would not do so. This is because the Prophet (Ò) told me in the form of a binding principle that: Oh ÝAlÐ, no believer will ever hold you as an enemy and no hypocrite will ever love you.
5- In a tradition from Imam ÑÁdiq (Ýa), it has been narrated that: The Prophet (Ò) in his last prayer supplicated for Imam ÝAlÐ (Ýa) in a way that the people heard his words. He said: Oh God, place the love of ÝAlÐ (Ýa) in the hearts of the believers and similarly place his awe and greatness in the hearts of the hypocrites. During this time, the verse: “Indeed those who have faith…” was revealed. 
 «إِنَّ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّالِحاتِ سَیَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ الرَّحْمنُ وُدّاً»
 AÎqÁq al-Îaqq, vol. 3, p. 83-86: «قُلِ اللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِى عِنْدَکَ عَهْداً، وَ اجْعَلْ لِى فِى قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ مَوَدَّةً، فَأَنْزَلَ اللّهُ تَعالى إِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّالِحاتِ سَیَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ الرَّحْمنُ وُدّاً »
 Ibid: «نُزِّلَتْ فِى عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِیْطالِب إِنَّ الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّالِحاتِ سَیَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ الرَّحْمنُ وُدّا قالَ: مَحَبَّةً فِى قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ»
