Detailed Answer:
The Prophet (ṣ) is narrated to have said to the Lady Fāṭimah (‘a): Oh Fāṭimah, God s e l e c ted your name from one of his names; he is Fāṭir and you are Fāṭimah.[1] The Prophet (ṣ) is again narrated to have said: My daughter Fāṭimah was named as such because God has kept her and those who love her away from the fire.[2] Imam ‘Alī (‘a) is narrated to have said: Fāṭimah was named Fāṭimah because God has kept her and the ones who love her away from the fire.[3] ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm has narrated from Yaqṭīnī, who narrated from Muḥammad ibn Zīyād…. from Abū al-Ḥasan (‘a) who said: Why was Fāṭimah named Fāṭimah? I said: In order that there be a difference between her name and other names. He said: She was named as such because God… had knowledge in regards to his creation before they were created and he knew that the Prophet (ṣ) would marry into the various tribes and that they would in turn desire the inheritance of his position. After Fāṭimah was born, he gave her this name because of the children who would come from her and this rank was bestowed upon them. Through this, the people were not allowed to reach what they coveted and Fāṭimah was named Fāṭimah because she cut off their hopes in inheriting this position (from the Prophet (ṣ)).[4]
Imam Ṣādiq (‘a) has similarly narrated the following in regards to the verse which says: “Indeed We sent it down on the Night of Ordainment.”: The intent behind the term ‘night’ is Fāṭimah and the intent behind the word ‘ordainment’ is God and whoever comprehends Fāṭimah in the proper way has comprehended the ‘Night of Ordainment’. So Fāṭimah has been named with this name because the people have been separated and kept away from her understanding and Fāṭimah has been separated from all uncleanliness.[5] [6]
