The Events of Muharram 4th as Narrated by Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi

ʿUbaydullah’s response to Umar ibn Saʿd’s letter/ Imam Husayn ('a)’s dignified and uncompromising attitude toward ibn Ziad and his remarks in his letter/ Imam Husayn ('a)’s response to Qays ibn Ashʿath with regard to pledging allegiance to Yazid/ The day Kanānah ibn ʿAtīq j o i ned Imam Husayn ('a) in Karbala

ʿUbaydullah’s response to Umar ibn Saʿd’s letter

In response to Umar ibn Saʿd’s letter, Ibn Ziad wrote: “Ask Husayn ibn Ali and all his companions to swear allegiance to Yazid. If they agree, we will inform you of our decision …!”[1]

When Umar ibn Saʿd received ʿUbaydullah’s letter he said: “I reckon ʿUbaydullah does not seek peace …”[2]

Imam Husayn (‘a)’s dignified and uncompromising attitude toward ibn Ziad and his remarks in his letter

After reading Ibn Ziad’s letter, ʿUmar ibn Saʿd sent it to Imam Husayn (‘a) so that he may consider Ibn Ziad’s demands.[3] The Imam, however, said the following after reading the letter:

[4]لا أُجيبُ ابْنَ زِيادَ بِذلِكَ ابَداً، فَهَلْ هُوَ إِلّا الْمَوْتَ، فَمَرْحَبَاً بِهِ

I shall never answer this letter of Ibn Ziad! Is it death that he seeks to frighten us with?! I welcome such a death![5]

Imam Husayn (‘a)’s response to Qays ibn Ashʿath with regard to pledging allegiance to Yazid

On Muharram 4th, Qays ibn Ashʿath [who was later to become one of the most wretched criminals who committed numerous atrocities in the tragic event of Ashura] came to meet Imam Husayn (‘a). In his meeting with the Imam he said:

“Don’t you want to submit to your cousin [i.e. Yazid]? If you do so, you will not be harmed and you will find all your wishes fulfilled!”[6]

Imam Husayn (‘a) replied:

أَنْتَ أَخُو أَخيكَ [محمّد بن الاشعث] أَتُريدُ أَنْ يَطْلُبَكَ بَنُو هاشِمٍ بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ دَمِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ عَقيلٍ؟! لا وَاللَّهِ لا أُعْطيهِمْ بِيَدي إِعطاءَ الذَّليلِ، وَ لا اقِرُّ اقْرارَ الْعَبيدِ![7]

You are certainly like you brother [who killed Muslem ibn ʿAqīl in Kūfah]! Do you wish that the Bani-Hāshim should take vengeance on you for more crimes than the killing of Muslem ibn ʿAqīl?! I swear by Allah that I shall not j o i n hands with them like their servile and mean agents, nor shall I submit to them like slaves [nor shall I run away]!

Then the Imam continued:

عِبادَاللَّهِ! أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَنْ تَرْجُمُونِ

O’ servants of Allah! I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord against your accusations against me![8]

[9]و أعُوذُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ مِّنْ كُلِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِيَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ

And I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord against any arrogant rebel who has no faith in the Day of Reckoning[10]

The day Kanānah ibn ʿAtīq j o i ned Imam Husayn (‘a) in Karbala

Kanānah ibn ʿAtīq was an ascetic man and one of the reciters of the Qur’an. He j o i ned Imam Husayn in Karbala on Muharram 4th.[11]
