INGRATITUDE TO A GREAT GIFT OF GOD (VERSE NO. 189 - 193)

Here the spiritual condition of polytheists in particular, and mankind in general is alluded to:

``It is He who created you from a single person, and made of him his mate.''

The single person or single thing, can be Adam, or the building block of animals, which is the protoplasm. The material basis of all living matter is the protoplasm which is a greyish, semitransparent, semifluid substance of complex chemical composition, within which physical and chemical, and electrical, changes are constantly taking place. Then the seed of man which is the spermatozoon, somehow similar to a flagellum, and the ovum of women are both made of the same material or protoplasm.

Then these two entities join together in the womb, to make a human being, either a male or a female.

When a young couple marry and have sexual intercourse, she becomes pregnant with what is called an embryo in the first month. When a few months passes by, the embryo is developed to a foetus, and the couple become sure of having a baby. They naturally desire to have a good, sound and safe child, and are also anxious about his or hers defect and deficiency. So in their anxiety, they turn to God, and pray to the Lord of Creation- Allah, to grant them - What the verse says - a righteous one.

The righteous qualification wanted here, is a comprehensive word with many shades of meaning that may satisfy the desires and expectations of almost all sorts of parents, with various beliefs and ideals. In its various meanings, righteous may include, sound and safe in body and mind, healthy, handsome, rightful, and of good moral disposition. So they pray for a righteous child and vow and solemnly promise to be thankful to God, if their prayer is answered, but alas!:

``When we gave them the righteous (and goodly child as they desired) they ascribed to others, a share in the gift that He had given them.''

When the baby is born, and the parent enjoy the company of their sweet and dear child, which is indeed the precious gift of God; they forget their promise of thankfulness. Besides their ingratitude, their gradual familiarity with their child, helps them to connect his creation with various natural phenomena, or superstitious ideas. If they do worship some kinds of idols, they ascribe to them a share of their having a good bab which is the gift of the only one God the creator. If the parent are naturalists, they may take it as a matter of natural course, or merely as a play thing in the material world. These sorts of conjectures will lead them to ingratitude and polytheism, or to setting up of false standards, in derogation of the dignity of God:

``But Allah is high exalted above the partners that they ascribe to Him.''

The partners that they ascribe to Allah, the Creator, be they idols, spirit, Jinns, or natural phenomena, or even a doctor or other human being, they all stand on nothing unless God will; making a means of them, and something to happen through them.

They have all been created `by God', and can create nothing themselves. When they cannot help themselves in a disease, or diaster, how can they help other creatures? One who is drowned in the sea himself can never save others by swimming. All the creatures are stuck up, and more helpless than one another. So we better come to ourself, and adhere to our compassionate and Merciful Lord:

Do they associate with Allah things that can create nothing and are themselves created by Him? Do they expect help from those who are not able to help themselves, and even if they call them to guidance they cannot, or will not, obey them?
