VERSES NO. 194-195

Commentators have differed to say who is addressed by this verse. Most of them are of opinion that the communication is directed to the unbelievers of Mecca, who fought the prophet in Badr. Some of the commentators have said that the verse is aimed at the weak hearted, and new converts, who were unwilling to come out for adventures, and a mention of them was made in the VERSE No. 5 of S 8.

On the other hand, the Arabic `TASTAFTEHU' which is translated here to Judgement, has two distinct meanings which imply asking God either for victory or His judgement on a matter. It is sure enough that the polytheists, before leaving Mecca for Badr, had a supplication around the sacred shrine of Kabbeh, asking Allah either to judge between them and Mohammad or help the rightful among the two parties to win a victory over the one in err and sin. In both cases the word is true in meaning:

``You idolaters prayed to God and asked Him to judge between you and Muslims, to differentiate between the rightful and the wrongful, by making the truthful victorious over the injurious, and hence the verse:

``If you were seeking the judgement of Allah (and a victory as a token for his judgement) now the judgement has come to you...''
