Verses 15-17Verses 11-14

Here the immediate reference is to a third group of people who are weak in mind and faith. They worship Allah only by word, which is at the tip of their tongue; and not at the middle of their hearts. They say something of faith which they do not mean it, because the faith has not penetrated in their hearts. They have sat at the edge of the precipice of disbelief, and with a faint push, they may fall in an abyss:ِ

``If something good befalls them they will have a little surety that everything is true. But if through a trial something bad befalls them, they turn their face and ignore all the existing tenets and principles.''

Sometimes a group of the Bedouines, (NOMADIC ARABS) came to visit our prophet. In the course of their journey, if they were relieved from a disease, or their wives gave birth to a baby son, instead of a daughter, or their cattle increased, they would be happy and their faith in the prophet increased. But if they got sick in their way or their wife gave birth to a daughter or one of their sheep, goats, or camels, died; they turned their faces from the prophet, and lost their faith in God. In fact, they looked at the religion of God from their material benefits stand point of view. Such people are still no rare in our age; their idols being their wives, children, and properties. In other word; such people are not serious in their faith and worship. When everything goes well with them, God will be all right too, but as soon as they are put to some trial, or they are afflicted by some sort of a misfortune they renounce faith, and cast off prayer, and deny whatever they claimed to have believed! This is because of their weakness in mind and faith. Whatever they testify of Monotheism and prophethood lays on the tip of their tongues.

So they fail in this world, and also in the life to come, and are the real losers for being left from this and driven from that. The next verse refers to their false gods, and what they really worship:ِ

``He calls apart from Allah what, which will neither harm him nor profit him, and besides; his harm is nearer to him than his help and profit!''

They worship the false gods, inanimate or animate, if they can be worshipped without any trouble! Such a wrong worship is of course not always neutral or without harm or some trifle profit. Through the worship of such false gods, they eventually lose and forget their real Lord and true Cherisher, and as a consequence of that they lose both, this world and the Hereafter.
