Verses 28-31Verses 26-27

Here the immediate reference is to the Jewish tribe of BANIGHORAIZAH, who were inhabited in a high piece of land at the north-east of Medina. They were bound by a treaty with the prophet to help in the defence of the city; but in the siege of the confederates, they violated their treaty and united with the enemies in order to destroy Islam and Moslems. They betrayed their citizens in a very awful hour of danger!

There lived three Jewish tribes in Medina, namely:- 1ِBANIGHORAIZAHBANINAZIRBANIGHINGHAA. All the three tribes had signed a treaty with the prophet not to help the enemies, and to live peacefully besides their Moslem citizens. They were free to live their own life as a Jew, and to perform their own religious rites as a Jew without the least interruption and obtrusiveness. BANIGHINGHAA in the second year after Hijrat (2-A.H.), and the tribe of BANINAZIR in the 4-A.H., violated their treaty and broke their promises, and took arm against the prophet and his followers! They were vanquished and left Medina for good. Some of them went to Syria and another party of them joined the Jews of KHAIBAR.

In the year 5-A.H., at the siege of confederates, BANIGHORAIZAH too, violated their agreement, and betrayed Moslems by joining the allies in the siege of Medina.

When the confederates failed intheir siege, and run away in panic, the prophet turned his attention to the foes disguised as friends. Their castles were surrounded by Moslem forces and a siege was laid that took 25 days.

Traitor is always timid, and Allah cast a terror in their heart. They found no other option but to yield without any condition. After the 25 days of siege they were starving and surrendered.

Nothing of what they had, could save them from the wrath of God and their painful fate. They had built their firm fortresses near Medina, on a piece of high land. They had all the necessary arms and equipments to support their resistance and defence, but as we mentioned above, Allah cast a terror in their hearts so that they yielded easily. When they surrendered, there was the question that how should the prophet treat those traitors, and what sort of a punishment did they deserve for their awful treason? They proposed SAAD-IBN-MUAZ to judge the matter. The prophet agreed with their request.

When SAAD made sure that both parties have put their trusts on his judgement, he issued his decree for their punishment, as follows:-

Those men of them who were apt to fight against Moslems had to be slayed.

Their women and children were to be taken captives.

Their lands, houses, and their properties of whatever they had, were to be divided among Moslems.

Meanwhile a few of them converted and lived among Moslem's brotherhood without any harm.

The issue was strictly fulfilled, and they were punished accordingly:-

``And Allah made you inheritors of their lands and their inhabitations, and their properties, and a land that you had not walked over; and Allah has power over everything.''
