Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 05)
Verses 6-10Verses 1-5

This is the first SUREH which begins with swear; in order to attract the attentions to the most important matters, or to some deep meanings.

God is mere truth Himself and needs not to put stress upon something by a swear. So the oaths in Qurän imply the importance of the matter by which the swearer has swore. It sometimes puts stress on the object of the swear, to show its importance and seriousness.

At the beginning of this Sureh we meet with three groups of characters. Those who have made a line of themselves to do an important jobِthose who avoid evil and hinder people from following Satan, as far as they canِand those who frequently mention and recite God's name and wonders. But who are these three groups? Is he one person who does three distinct kind of work, or are they three separate persons each having a certain task?

Some commentators take the first three verses of this chapter to refer to angels. Some other understand them to be the Godly men, who line up themselves in the worship of God, and hinder themselves and the others as far as they can, from evil deeds. Their instrument or weapon in their sacred strife is the remembrance of God and mentioning Him frequently.

Both of the two commentaries do not contrast with each other, and the two idea may be gatheres in the meaning of the verses; because what a Godly man does is what the angels of God say.

The said three consecutive verses imply an oath, the object of which is the Oneness of God, which is an abstract of the Divine Message. Our Lord is the only one unique God who has created the heavens and earth and whatever is in them. He cares and controls them. He developes, cherishes, and maintains them, and He has no co-sharer, or the like of Him in his Essence, Attributes, and works. It is only God Who deserves to be worshippedِto be praised, and to be thanked, for being the source of whatever is good.

We have to know that the Man is not a play toy at the hands of contending forces and blind chances. A wonderful great order prevails and controls the whole universe; and an amazing harmony and unity of purpose exist in all natural phenomena, that proves only one thought, one power, and one hand, rules and regulates everything! We therefore will have to conform our plans and wishes, with the general plan of the Creator of the universe; and the cherisher of whatever there is to be cherished. We must have discipline in our work and affairs. We must repel falsehood and avoid evil, and make clear and distinct the line in which we strive if we are willing to prosper.

As to the meaning of the word, ``EASTS'' in plural (VERSE NO.5), astronomers say:- ``There are only two equinoctial day and night in our solar year.'' This is when the sun in its apparent annual motion crosses the celestial equator; so called because the length of the day and night are then equal. On every other day the sun rises at a shifting point either to north or south due east. Therefore, everyday the sun rises from another point in the East which differs from yesterday's point of sun rise, and hence; ``The Lord of the Easts''.
