EXPLANATIONS FROM MAFURADATTHE WILL OF GOD IN ISLAMIC TRADITIONS

After the discussion on knowledge, among the attributes of glory and beauty the most important one is that of the “power of God”. It is the power that is unrestricted and unlimited in all sense and includes everything that exists. The power that is accompanies by authority and will, so things are created when He wills and when He thinks of erasing them everything is destroyed. All that exists with strange and great physical structures and with beautiful and delightful countenance are the signs and proof of His unlimited power.

This is a very profound statement and to understand it in depth we will have to discuss some imperative points:

The proof of God’s unlimited power.

God is active and has the full authority.

The proofs against those who deny the generality of his power.

God is unconnected with the impossible.

We will first take up the first point and take the help of the Qura’n and study its verses:

Surah Mulk Verse 1:

Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion; and He has power over all things.

Surah Talaq Verse 12:

God is He who has created the seven firmaments and the earth, in similar number, and commands are sent down amidst them, that you may know that God has power over all things.

Surah Hadeed Verse 2:

To Him belongs the Dominion of the heavens and the earth: It is He who gives life and death; and He has the power over all things.

Surah Rum Verse 54;

He creates whatever He wills, and it is He who has all the knowledge and Power.

Surah Maidah Verse 120:

To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is therein. It is He who has the power over all things.

Surah Isra Verse 99:

Do they not see who has created the heavens and the earth ands has the power to create the like of them?

Surah Ahqaf verse 33:

Do they not see that it is God who has created the heavens and the earth and never wearied with their creation, and is able to give life to the dead? Yes He has power over all things.

Surah Ma’arij Verse 40:

I swear by the Lord of all points in the east and the west that we can certainly.

Surah Fatir Verse 44:

God is not such that anything escapes Him in the heavens and the earth; He is all-knowing, omnipotent. (1)

Surah Al Imran Verse 73:

Say, “All the bounties are in the hands of God; He grants them to whom He pleases, God cares for all and He knows all things.

1. It should be noted that the word Qadeer has been used 45 times in the Qura’n for God in different styles like, “God has power over all things.” “ Innallaha Ala Kulli Shayin Qadeer” , “ Wallahu Ala kulli shayyin Qadeer”, “ Innaka Ala Kulli Shayin Qadeer”, “wa huwa ala kulli Shayyin Qadeer”, “ wa Inallaha Ala Nasrihim la Qadeer”, “ Wa huwa Ala Jamehem iza yashaao  Qadeer” The word “Qaadir” has been used 7 times and the words “ qaadiruun” and “Qadirin” to have been used to denote God. It has also negated the use of the term “Helplessness” and established his authority on everything material. The 10 verses cited above are also examples of the 3 kinds.
