Hardships that re-awakenTribulations that are God’s punishments

All that has been mentioned above has been dealt with in the Islamic traditions in details. The human society has faced tribulations that were punishments from God. We submit a few examples:

Imam Jafar Sadiq has said:

“When God is furious with any nation but does not inflict any collective punishment then there is inflation, a decrease in the life span, the business houses incur losses, the rivers have less water, the fruits are not good and the unjust people rule the roost, and rain is scanty.” (1)

In another Hadith Imam Ali Reza is reported to have said:

“God inflicts fresh punishments when people resort to inventing sins that no one has seen earlier.” (2)

In yet another Hadith Imam Jafar Sadiq is reported to have said:

“People have died more because of their sins then their natural deaths and those who have got a long live due to their righteousness are more than those who have naturally lived long.” (3)

Imam Jafar Sadiq is reported to have said:

“Some times people are aloof from the night prayers because of their sins. The effect of this evil in greater than the effect of the knife in the flesh of the sinner.” (4)

This Hadith in this or the previous discussion can be the best proof example about the natural link of unpleasant events due to sins. (

Reflect).

In one Hadith Imam Mohammad Baqir is reported to have said:

“I have read in the traditions of the Holy Prophet that:

“Un warranted death will increase in the society where adultery is rampant. Things will become scarce and famine will occur in a place where people resort to cheating in weights; The society that does not give Zakat (or even charity) will lose God’s grace (agriculture, fruits, mining and everything else will decrease). God will install the enemy on the people who break their oaths. Wealth will go into the hands of evil people in a society where people do not care for their relations.

When the guidance of the Ahlul bait is rejected and people stop practicing Amr bil Maruf and Nahi An Munkar then evil people will gain sway and the righteous will pray but their prayers will not be granted.” (1)

Amirul Mumineen has explained Surah Nuh in a very strange manner. A respected commentator from among the Sunnis Qalansi records that a person came to Amirul Mumineen and said:

O Commander of the faithful! I have sinned a lot and have blackened my book of deeds. Give me some prayers through which God may forgive me.” The Imam said, “Repent!”

Another person came and said Commander of the faithful! I do farming and the crop has dried due shortage of rain.” The Imam said: “Repent”

Yet another person came and said, “Commander of the faithful! I am poor and dependent and have no strength left in me because of it. Please request God to give me sustenance as he does to all”

The Imam said, “Repent”

A fourth person came and said Commander of the faithful! I have too much wealth but no child. Please pray to God to give me a son.”

The Imam said, “Repent”

Another person said, “The fruit harvest in my orchards have decreased please pray to God to increase them.” The Imam said, “Repent”

A person said, “O Commander of the faithful! The streams in our area have dried, water has decreased in the canals and the signs of famine are beginning to show. We beseech you to pray for us!” The Imam said, “Repent”

Ibn Abbas said “I was present at that time with the Imam so I said, “O commander of the faithful! They have asked for different things but you have given the same reply to all?” The Imam said, “O son of my Uncle! Did you not hear the verse spoken by Noah (recorded in verse 10 to 12 in Surah Nuh and he said, “Then I said, “Seek forgiveness of your Lord? Verily He is the most forgiving (11) He will send down clouds to rain upon you in torrents (12) and bestow wealth and offspring upon you and make gardens for you and make rivers too.” (2)

All the commentators have quoted this hadith from Hasan Basri even though it has been truthfully recorded and it is nearly certain that he has taken this hadith from Hazrat Ali because he had gained a lot of knowledge from the divine light of the Imam.

Then there are those traditions recorded in history and other books that are salient proof of the link between sins and tribulations. (Although from we discern that the effect of the deeds is the tribulations and from others we know that some hardships are punishments from God and some are a combination of both)
