The signs of the Day of Reckoning are evident:

The first stage of the Day of Reckoning is the advent of the signs. The fact to be noted is that various verses of the Qura’n tell us about the signs that denote the close proximity of the Day of Reckoning. These signs are known as the “Signs of the Hour” as we will discuss later. This name has also been derived from the Qura’n. The word “Ashraat is plural and the singular is Sharat which means “signs” or moment but here it denotes the Day of Reckoning.

These signs are those important and horrific events that will take place before the Day of Reckoning. Each one of them will be the declaration of the end of the world or the beginning of the Day of Reckoning. The point to be noted here is that the events will not be similar but different. We can divide those under three headings as follows:

Those events that will take place before the end of this world.

Those events that will take place with the ending of this world.

Those events that will begin with the Day of? Reckoning and the beginning of a new life. The features of each will be worth studying.

We turn to the Qura’n after this brief introduction. We will first discuss the first type of the events and reflect upon the verses concerning them.

Verse 18 of Surah Muhammad:

“Do they then wait only for the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly? But some of its portents have already come.”

Verse 1 of Surah Qamar:

“The Hour is close and the moon has been cleft asunder.”

Verse 10 of Surah Dukhan:

“Then wait for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke”
