The easiness and the difficulties in the accounting on the Day of JudgmentWhich deeds will be heavy on the scales?

There are many traditions about this also that tell us about the deeds that will be accounted first. There are very meaningful statements about each one of them. Their study not only improves a person’s social behavior but also teaches him the Islamic ideology.

There is a hadith that the Messenger of Islam said:

“ On the Day of Judgment no one can put as foot forward until he is asked about the following four things:

How he spent his life?

Where did he lose his youth?

From where did he accumulate wealth and where did he spend it?

How was his love for us the Ahlul bait? (1)

On the Day of Judgment according to the 24 hours of the day and night 24 treasures will be opened. One treasure will be full of divine light and joy and the person will be so happy after seeing it that had it been distributed among all the sinners in Hell its fire would have been doused. This treasure will from the time he obeyed God.

When the second treasure is opened he will find it foul smelling dark, and terrifying. He will be so horrified that if he had been distributed amongst the people of Paradise they would forget their pleasures. This treasure belongs to the time when he disobeyed God.

The third treasure will be opened which he will find empty for it will contain neither the boons of pleasure nor will he be terrified. This treasure belongs to the time he was sleeping or was attending to his daily chores. His sadness on seeing it cannot be described because he could have filled it with goodness. This is why God has said “It is the Day of Mutual loss and gain.”(2)

There is another hadith in which the Messenger said:

“I am the first to come before God and then the Book of God will be brought, then my Ummah will be presented. They will stand and God will ask them, “How did you treat my book and the Messenger?” (3)

There is another hadith that says he said:

“The first thing that will be accounted for each person will be the daily prayers. If it is accepted then all others deeds will be accepted.” (4)

And yet another hadith says:

“Each person will be first questioned about his companions.” (5)

We may find it contradictory about the first thing that will be asked in the hereafter and if this is first then how come the next one precedes it? Actually there are a few deeds that will be asked about at first. All the things mentioned in the hadiths belong to this first stage questioning.

These hadiths also highlight the importance of these problems i.e. Tawhid, the belief in Prophethood, the love of the Ahlul bait, the daily prayers and companions etc.

It has also been said that there will be various instances on the Day of Judgment and the first question to be asked in them will from the ones named above.

Amirul Muminin is reported to have said in a hadith:

“Fear God about his creatures and their population because in His presence you will be asked about the earth and the creatures (animals) on it. (1)

This hadith tells us that mankind will be asked about the destruction of the atmosphere and the wanton killing of the animals.
