The Vastness of ParadiseGates of paradise in Hadiths

The ins c r i p tions on the gates of any edifice denote the purposes. We learn from the hadiths that there will be ins c r i p tions on the gate of Paradise. We come to a few conclusions when we study them. The explanations given for these ins c r i p tions high light some facts:

Jaber bin Abdullah has narrated this hadith of the messenger of Islam:

“On the gate of Paradise is inscribed “there is no Lord but God”, Mohammad is his messenger and Ali is the brother of the Messenger.” (1)

This hadith has been mentioned in many books of both the Shias and Sunnis in different terms. It highlights three basic Islamic tenets.

Imam Sadiq is quoted in one hadith to have said:

“ It will be inscribed on the Gate of paradise that giving charity in the way of God will merit ten fold rewards and giving a loan will be rewarded 18 fold.(2)

So we learn that one of the basics for entering Paradise is to think about the needy and poor and help them in their financial distress.

There is one lengthy hadith which is about the Messenger and his journey (Meraj) whence he says both Paradise and Hell. The Messenger said:

“There are 8 gates of Paradise. There are four words inscribed on each one of them. There are 7 gates of Hell and on each gate are inscribed 3 words and who ever does them then it is better than the world and all thing in it. And Jibril told the Messenger that Ali is the biggest of all.

Before the four words on each gate is written: “There is no god but God; Mohammad is His Messenger and Ali is the Wali”

On the first gate is inscribed: “The means to a correct life”

Frugality, “Recognition of Truth and Rights”, “abhorrence from animosity” and the companionship of pious people. On the Second gate is written: “Four means for happiness in the hereafter” are: Benevolence on the Orphans, sympathy for the poor and the widows, the desire and attempt to fulfill the needs of the believers, and the kindness to the destitute and poor.

On the third gate is written: “There are four means to remain healthy and hearty’: Talk less, sleep less, wander less and eat less. On the fourth Gate is written: “He who believes in God and the Day of Judgment” should: Respect his guests, look after his neighbors, honor his parents, talk good or keep silent. On the fifth gate was written: “He who desires that he should not be suppressed should not be unjust to others; he who desires not to be abused should not abuse others; he who desires not to be insulted should not insult others and he who desires to catch a strong rope for this world and the hereafter should say: There is no god but God; Mohammad is Messenger and Ali is the Wali.” On the sixth gate is written: He who desires that his grave be open should build a mosque; he who desires that his body should not be eaten by the insects should remain in the mosque longer than others; he who desires that his body should remain intact in the grave should clean the mosque and he who desires that he may have house in Paradise then he should spread the mat on the mosque’s floor. On the seventh gate is written: the divine light is in the hearts because of four things: Visiting the sick, washing the dead body, buying the shroud, and paying the debts. On the gate is written; whoever wants to enter Paradise through these gates should do four things: Be philanthropic, be polite to others, be charitable and never hurt a fellow human.

There are many moral and educative angles of this hadith. It clearly tells us that these are the things that are needed for a person to be able to enter Paradise. (3)

1. Behar –ol-Anwar vol.8 page 131 hadith 34 and this hadith is found in many books of the Ahle Sunnah like in Fi Helatol Aulia vol. 7 page 256 of Hafiz Abu Naiim Isphahani, Tareekh Baghdad vol.7 page 387 of Abu Bakar Baghdadi, Manaqib Amirul Muminin of Ibn Maghazali, Manaqib Sahaba of Hafiz Sama’ani Nisaburi, Zaqairol Oqba of Tabari page 66, Lisasnol Mizan vol.4 page 81. Of Ibn Hajar Askalani, for more information see Ahqaqol Haqq pages 199, 280 and 387.
2. Behar-ol-Anwar vol.8 page 181 hadith 140. The reward of 18 fold may be because giving a loan involves two good deeds, firstly to fulfill the need of the believer, and secondly to protect his honor. Each has ten fold rewards because two rewards are less when he takes his loan back and 18 remain.
3. Behar-ol-Anwar vol. 8 page 145 hadith 67.
