Crime and Sin Under Selling:

because they are the cause of the insult of the true believers. The respect of a person is equal to blood or may be more and this is why Qura’n has prescribed Hell for it.

Verses 1 to 4 of Surah Humaza say;

“ Woe to every slanderer and backbiter who has amassed wealth and hoarded it. He deems that his wealth will make him live forever. No! He will be flung into the crushing fire.”

The commentators have dealt in details about the words “Humaza” and “Lumaza” and they both have been derived from “Hamaza” and “Lamaza” respectively. Some have taken the meaning of both to be the same and have described them as backbiting and slandering. Others have taken the first as backbiting and the second as showing disdain through facial contortions or through sign with the eyes. Some other has taken the first to be slandering someone behind his back and the second as just slandering.

It seems everyone who ridicules with disdain others to insult them by words or by signs, looking for means to defame a person will be included in its meaning.

The crushing fire of Hell (Hutama) will crush them as they want to crush the respect of others.

These are the greatest mischief makers as described by the Holy Messenger who said:

“Those who tattle the most and create rifts between friends and ridicule respectful people (are the mischief makers).”(1)

Wasteful expenditure.

Wasteful expenditure of every kind is also a greater sin and Qura’n has given a great emphasis to this fact. In verse 43 of Surah Mumin the Book says:

“These wasters shall be the dwellers of the fire.”

Though this particular verse is about the Pharaoh and his follower but Qura’n has later confirmed it for everyone in verse 27 of Surah Isra:

“Verily the squanderers are the brethren of the devils.”

It is certain that the end of the devils and their brethren will the fire of Hell because of God’s wrath and chastisement. The words “Israaf” and “Saraf” according to some linguists mean being excessive in any work though it is often used for wasteful expenditure. (2)

This is why those who cross the limits prescribed by God have been termed as “Musrif” in the Qura’n and the killing of the innocent too is regarded as the same.

The word “Tabzeer” is derived from “Bazr” and means to stretch or spread and are used for instances where money is wastefully expended benefiting none. (3)

Today we find that in this world there is excess in everything not only in material bounties and this will lead to the fires of Hell in which all the big and small will burn. There is none to hear the screams and help them. We confirm that the fires of Hell are the fitting punishment for the squanderers and wasters.
