This issue is also among the topics for which the Qura’n prescribes Hell. Verse 14 of Surah Nisaa says:

“Whoever disobeys God and His Messenger and transgresses His limits will be cast by Him into the fire to abide there eternally and have a dreadful torment.”

The term “Limits set by God” means His commandments and His Laws. The linguists have given three meanings for the term, to restrain someone, to exceed the prescribed norm and excessiveness but literally all the three meanings revert to restrain (1) because it is like stopping something getting mixed up with something else in the negative manner like the boundaries of one property encroaching on another or like the borders of one country usurping another’s lands. The word “Mana” has a great emphasis in its meaning and thus is used for excessiveness also.

The divine commandments are termed as limits because they prescribe a limit which a person should not enter or cross and this is why the punishment according to the Sharia is called “Hadd” because they are often connected with the repetition of a particular crime. The term “Tilka Hudoodallah” has been used in many verses of the Qura’n after describing some commandment.

The verse in discussion is about inheritance and the verses 229 and 230 of Surah Baqarah and verse 1 of Surah Talaaq are about divorce and verse 187 of Surah Baqarah is about having sex during religious retreat and fasting. The verse 7 of Surah Mujadilah is about the penance for Zihar (a kind of divorce) and was revealed after it. What we learn here is that “limits set by God” has a vast meaning and includes all such issues of doubts.

We also know that every sin does not lead to burning in Hell forever and this may be about those who disbelieve and rebel intentionally against God’s commandments or those who neglect these limits and get so immersed in sins that they leave this world in a state of disbelief because we know that some sinners will merit the forgiveness of God and some will get salvation while those who have committed the lesser sins may be forgiven.

Even those who repent may be forgiven. (1)

One group from among the “Wa-ee-diah” has taken the support of this verse and said that those who commit the greater sins will always burn in Hell but our discussion clarifies the issue. More details will be given in the proper place. Inshallah.
