The Day of terrorized facesThe Day of Gathering

This term too has come only once in verse 50 of Surah Waqiyah in the Qura’n as an answer to the objections raised by the disbelievers who objected about life after death. It says:

“All will surely be gathered for an appointed meeting of the known day.”

There can be two explanations for this day being known:

The first is profound knowledge about its history. We know that this is restricted to God and no one, not even the Apostles, Messengers and the close angles have any knowledge about it. But to all this day is proven, irrefutable and known in every way.

The second is the superfluous knowledge and this means that we all know that such a day will occur and as we will discuss later, this knowledge comes out from deep in our nature. There are various proofs about it and this is why a scholar as well as a layman can acquire knowledge about it. All the apostles of God have predicted about it so it is the Known Day, irrefutable, though its date is unknown.

It is like us knowing that one day we will die and leave this world but no one knows the date of his death.

Most commentators have accepted the first interpretation but some have emphasized the second and have taken the word “Qul” to be the proof of its generality because it means that everybody must be told. (1)

Yet it is possible for both the interpretation to be present in the verse.

Normally, the message we get from the term “Known Day” is that we should be serious about it, and prepare ourselves to meet it, believing that the Day of Judgment will come with all its signs and finality. This knowledge and certitude has an extra ordinary educating affect.
