The Day when all will come pleading for themselvesThe Day when hearts and eyes will be horror stricken The Day when eyes will stare in horror

This too a very educating explanation that Qura’n gives us in verse 35 of Surah Naziat:

“The Day when man shall remember what he strove for”

This remembrance is due to seeing the book of deeds or because of their physical manifestation, or because of the witness of the limbs, or because of the witness the angels will give to God, or because of the lifting of the secrecy from men’s hearts and the destruction of negligence and ignorance. Every secret will be opened and man will remember all that he strove for but there will be no recourse to undo his slothfulness, crimes, and sins.

The same meaning is there in verse 23 of Surah Fajr and it says:

“And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember but how will that remembrance avail him?”

And then adds:

“He will say, “Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for my life!”

Such remorse and regret will have no benefit though the despair and sadness will increase.

The explanation of “Li Hiyaati” needs attention. This tells us that the life actually is the life in the hereafter. The life of this world does not deserve to be called life. In Quranic terms it is nothing but lust and frolic.

The purpose is to warn man before he is incarcerated in such a narrow abyss so that he should make best use of the opportunities because it will be very late to be attentive that Day.
