Fear the Day of wide spread evilThe Day when no person shall help another

This des c r i p tion is about another aspect of the Day of Judgment in the Qura’n. Verse 106 of Surah Al Imran says:

“On the Day some faces will be bright and some blackened.”

The shining faces will belong to those whose certitude in faith will brighten them openly. This is why they will be showered with God’s mercy and will live there forever. Verse 107 of Surah Al Imran says:

“As for those, whose faces shall be bright, they shall be in the mercy of God; they shall abide therein forever.”

But those with darkness in the hearts will be the faithless, disbelievers and black hearted criminals. Their injustices will come forth and they will be overwhelmed by God’s punishment to be told as described in verse 106 of Al Imran:

“Taste then the chastisement in which you disbelieved.”

In verse 27 of Surah Yunus the Book says:

“The recompense for the evil of those who have earned evil is that ignominy shall come on them; they shall have no protector from the wrath of God as if their faces have been covered pieces of the pitch dark night.”

In verses 38 and 39 of Surah Abasa God says:

(Some) face on that Day shall be radiant joyously laughing”

In The verses 40 and 41 of Surah Abasa God says:

“And (other) faces on that Day shall look like soot; darkness shall cover them.”

On which occasion will some faces be radiant and some blackened? Some say when the ranks will disperse; some say when the books of deeds will be seen and some say when the people rise from the graves or when they are confronted with God’s scale of justice.

But it seems that since it will be the Day of the revelation of the truth and deeds this will happen when the people will leave their graves.

Whose faces will be radiant and whose faces will be blackened?

The commentators have given various interpretations about it. Some times it has been declared for some fixed people but it is evident that the faces of those with certitude in faith will be radiant and the faces of all disbelievers and criminals will be blackened.

Finally the commentators attribute these two des c r i p tions to the evident meaning and they say that radiance depicts happiness while blackness depicts sadness. (1)

There is nothing that can go against this evidence so the verse should be taken in its literal sense. The Qura’n in verse 12 of Surah Hadid says:

“Their light running before them on their right hand”

When this is so then will it be surprising that some faces will be radiant and some faces blackened?

What a painful experience it will be when whatever is in the hearts will be evident on the faces. It will be a day of great ignominy for those with darkness in their hearts and a day of prominence for those with radiant hearts. This will be the reason that the believers will get all the respect even at the beginning of the Day of Reckoning and the disbelievers will have nothing but curses and admonishments.
