Glad tidings and Severest punishmentsFreedom of mankind

The sixth verse tells us that the purpose of the revelation of the Qura’n is to free mankind from darkness and bring him out into light. It is said:

“(This is) a book We revealed to you so that you may bring forth people from utter darkness into light by their Lord’s permission to the way of the mighty, the Praised One.”

Darkness has been used in the plural form because it has wide connotations and includes all manner of darkness like, the darkness of polytheism, oppression, ignorance, egoism, etc and they cover a man’s heart with darkness.

The purpose of the revelations of the divine books is to free mankind from this darkness and fill his mind with the light of monotheism, piety, justice, brotherhood etc.

It should also be noted that darkness here is used in the plural form “Zulimaat” but “Noor” is singular and this is because there is only one path for monotheism and truth for there is none other. The straight path is that which joins the created to the creator.

This path is separate from the evil ways and the light of belief; piety, monotheism and unity are its assets. Polytheism is the base of egoism and the darkness of disunity.

Some commentators have limited the word “Zulimaat” to polytheism and “Noor” to Tawhid. Thus one of the purposes of the mission of an Apostle of God is to free mankind from darkness whether it is intellectual or related to belief and the deeds resulting from it or guidance like the light and life.

This purpose may include the nurturing and guidance, education, the implementation of justice and prevention of unlawful deeds. It is also notable that the Qura’n has spoken about all the purposes separately also.

The Noor and guidance in Qura’n are not intertwined for Noor in Qura’n means the Apostle. Verse 46 of Surah Ahzab says:

“And the one who invites to God by His command And illuminating lamp.”

According to Tafsir Al Mizan the word “anfaas” means the guidance of the common people (till the judgment day). The term “By His command” includes in Godliness
