The ways of connecting with the unseen.

These verses give us a general detail of the 4 ways the apostles connected with the unseen world

The first verse mentions three ways and Allama Tabrisi explained this verse as “There is no human who could talk with God except that the inspiration was sent to him like David in whose heart God revealed the Psalms. God some times talks from behind a screen like the case of Moses or sends his emissaries with the messages as was in the case of Gabriel coming to the Messenger.

Some times it is through a thought in the heart or through some sound ways that only the apostle is able to hear or through an angel.

The revelation is like an instant awareness and this is done through a host of words. It is often also done through hints.

This is what Raghib has noted in Mafuradat but Ibn Faris in Maqayis-ol-Loghata has given the real meaning as “The inspiration of knowledge” which may be hidden or open to some other person.”

Ibn Manzoor has given an important des c r i p tion of this word and has defined it as, prophethood, inspiration, and words that are revealed in the minds or hearts. Other great linguists have also described it in the same more or less but Khaleel Ibn Ahmad has described it as ins c r i p tion and collection but according to scholars it is used for denoting the relay of the messages of God to His apostles. This meaning has vast connotations in the Qura’n and includes all manner of delivery of such messages. It is used also for transfer of knowledge even in the animals (as instincts) as in the case of the honey bee described in verse 68 of Surah Nahl that says:

“And your Lord inspired the bee.”

Then there is the inspiration that God sent in the heart of the mother of about her son Moses as described in verse 7 of Surah Qassas:

“And we inspired the mother of Moses.”

Such inspiration has also been sent to those who were ordinary men like Joseph who was inspired when he was a child and not yet a prophet

“And We put into his heart: “Indeed one day you shall inform them about this affair of theirs.”  [Verse 15 of Surah Yusuf]

This has been even described as the temptation that Satan instills in people as described in verse 112 of Surah Anam that says:

“And so we have appointed for every prophet enemies from among Satan, mankind and Jinn inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion.”

Then there are the command connected with the vegetation as described in verse 5 of Surah Zalzaal and it says:

 “Because your Lord inspired it.”

The words, “ From behind the screen” means that God speaks to His apostles through a special wave length and His apostle is able to hear the words without the need of any book like the words that are heard fro behind the screen.

The second verse speaks about the coming of the angels with the revelation. It says: “The Trusted Spirit brought it down upon your heart so that you may warn.”

We should also note that two attributes of the revelation bearing angel have been mentioned “Ar-Rooh” which means life itself and “Al Ameen” which speaks about trust keeping and both of them are very important attributes for Messengership and its teaching.

From various verses and hadiths we learn that the angel deputed to bring the revelations to the Messenger was named Gabriel but this has been in said in the 3rd verse under discussion in the plural sense because others were also deputed to do the same work. God says:

“Verily there came our messengers to Abraham with glad tidings and they said, “Greetings of peace!” and he answered “Greetings of peace!”

The glad tiding brought by them was the birth of Ismail and Ishaaq and Abraham had spent many years of his life yearning for a son who would continue his mission.

Then the verse mentions another responsibility of the angels and that was to destroy the city of Lot after giving Abraham the glad tidings.

Then the verse mentions another responsibility of the angels and that was to destroy the city of Lot after giving Abraham the glad tidings.

The 4th verse describes yet another kind of revelation and that is the revelation which is sent to the apostle through true dreams and its importance does not diminish when he wakes up. God says:

“He said, “O my son! I have dreamt that I am slaying you, now what is your view?” He said, “O father! Do as you are bidden and you will find me steadfast by the will of God”

We read in the nest few verses that Abraham was ready to fulfill the dream and it is no secret that had this been some ordinary dream he would not have prepared to sacrifice his son with his own hands. So this tells us that the dream was nothing but a revelation of God.

In the same was the Messenger was commanded through a dream about the Muslims entering the Grand Mosque Ka’aba and performing the Hajj rituals. Verse 27 of Surah Fath Says:

“Indeed God shall fulfill the true vision He showed to His Messenger. Certainly you shall enter the Grand Mosque if God wills, secure having your heads shaved and having your hair cut short, without fear. He knew what you knew not and He granted besides that a near victory.”

Here the words “God shall fulfill the true vision” mean that this dream of the Messenger was no ordinary one but a revelation.

The 5th verse speaks about the connection of the apostles with the creator and this is also found in the first. Here the verse says ““But when he saw it moving as if it were a snake he fled and did not look back. A Voice addressed him, “O Moses! Come near and do not fear for you are one among the secured ones.”

Any Moses heard this loud and clear and according to some traditions (1) Moses said: I heard the voice from God coming from all sides and not just one.”

So he heard it through his ears and with his entire body (other than the two ears) it was not in words but God is able to instill His message in His chosen slave in the way He wants. This is the way they acquired knowledge and it is without any doubt. This method was used in the event of Moses and all other apostles.

The method may be the use of seeing fire in a green tree or hearing the voices from all the surroundings. It also suggests that he fire came from the green tree and they have heard everything through their entire body or as some others say that all the voices in the universe are connected with this voice. It is something that is impossible for any one other than God to perform. It is the same about the methods mentioned in Vese4 11 of Surah Ta-ha and verse 8 of Surah Naml.

In the first God says: “And when he came to it he was called by name “O Moses’ Verily I am your Lord so take off your shoes for you stand on the sacred ground of Tuwa.”

In verse 8 of Surah Naml [NOT NAHL] God says:

“He was called: “Blessed is whosoever is in the fire ands whoever is around it.”

Anyway all these verses speak about the connection of the apostles with the Creator of the Universe. The inability of the arguments about the details of these events is no secret. It depends on the preaching of the apostles and the revelations of the Books that were sent from the unseen to these apostles. It is important that we should now revert to the written proofs to understand the details.
