MAKING EXCUSES
VERSE NO.11-14
When the prophet set out from Medina to Mecca to perform the Lesser Pilgrimage, which ended to Hudaybeyeh Peace Treaty, he summoned all Moslims to accompany him. Although there was a well enough response, some of the Bedouins stayed behind and made excuses. They were weak in faith and did not want to share in any trouble. In fact, they thought that it was the last journey of the prophet, and because Moslems were unaware, they conjectured that, they would be traped by the Meccans; and none of them would return back safely.
When once again they saw that Allah supported His Messenger and servants, and they returned sound and safe and successful, they made their excuses saying; we had to look after flocks and herds, and to our household. They begged the prophet's pardon. Even now their flimsy excuses were based on a calculation of worldly profit or loss, without thinking that leaving their prophet unarmed in the hands of their enemy was a great spiritual loss for them. However, their apology was a thing on the tip of their tongue and not in the depth of their hearts, and they were not truthful in their repentance:-
``Say:- Who can avail you then the least against Allah if He intends to hurt you or to profit you?''
Then QurÌn pulls the curtain aside, and frankly says:-
``You rather thought that the Messenger and believers would never return to their families, and such fancies were adorned in your hearts...''
They were cowards, and weak in faith, and therefore willing to escape any kind of trouble, but their analysis of the events were all wrong.
