A REMARKABLE TRIAL
VERSE NO. 12-13
``O, you who have believed! When you have to have a private talk with the Messenger, advance some alms before your contact.''
Our prophet never asked a reward for his teachings and guidance. As his followers became more and more, he went short of time for handling the affairs which were ever increasing.
Some people had their own special cases, which they were not willing to disclose it in the presence of their religious brothers, and had to consult privately with the Messenger of God.Some others were selfish, and thought too much of themselves, and wanted to monopolize the prophet's time. More than all, the class of rich ones would waste the prophet's time who was very shy to reject people; whereas the wealthy took their whisperings as a privilege, and proof of their superiority over the other Moslims!
It was therefore recommended that they spend something in charity for the good of their poorer brethren, when they asked to visit the Messenger of God privately. Of course, this charity was not something obligatory and incumbent upon them.
The instruction had a great effect, because no one else except HAZRAT IMAM ALI(AS) did a whispering or private talk. So, no one paid the alms too! This proved that the love for wealth in their heart was deeper than the love for private talk with the prophet!T he only Moslim that fulfilled the above verse was HAZRAT IMAM ALI(AS). Although he was not a rich man, yet he, in several times after the revelation, gave a sum in charity and then spoke to the prophet in private, and asked him the questions he had.
