Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 1-4Verses 9-11

OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO. 9-11
In a year of famine and extreme scarcity of food, a merchant named DAHIYEH came from Syria leading a carvan carrying food. The arrival of the caravan was announced by the sound of Drums and Trumpets. This happened exactly when the prophet was performing the Friday Prayer. Many of the worshippers left the prayer and rushed towards the caravan to buy some food. It is narrated that only twelve men and one woman remained with the prophet to perform the Prayer! The above verses came down to this effect in order to repoach the nominal Moslims.

THE GREAT POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS ASSEMBLY
The above verses are about one of the important religious duties which is the FRIDAY PRAYER. It was obligatory upon every individual (WAJIB AYNI) in the presence of the prophet (SA), and also obligatory in the times of the Infallible Imams and their specific representative.
As for the time of concealment of the 12th Imam, it is an elective obligation which means that people can choose between the Friday Prayer and the Noon Prayer. However, the precaution is not to abandon its performance in time of a just Islamic government.
FRIDAY
FRIDAY is the Moslim Sabbath or Sunday. On Friday, a certain congregational prayer is performed instead of the ordinary noon prayer. Such a public worship prepares a social contact for Moslims of various classes and grades. It also serves to strengthen the ties of union, brotherhood and mutual consultations.
Contrary to the Jewish ideas of Sabbath, a Moslim never thinks that God will even take a rest or an off duty, on the seventh day as we read in GENESIS 2:2:-
``By the sevent day God finished what he had been doing, and stopped working.''
According to QurÌn God's work never ends and in everyday He has another work to do, and He is always active. A Moslim Believes that God never gets tired and needs no rest at all.
FRIDAY is a day of worship and prayer, but Sabbath is only a day of rest and repose:-
``Work six days a week, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your slave, and the foreigners who work for you, and even your animal can have a rest. EXODUS 23:12''
