Verses 9-11Verses 5-8

OCCASION OF REVELATION
VERSE NO. 5-8
In the course of the expedition against the tribe of BANI-MOSTALAGH, two Moslims, a Helper and an Emigrant differed upon taking water out of a well; and their dispute turned to a quarrel. Then, some friends of both sides intervened between the two quarreling Moslims, and rioting broke out. IBN-UBAI, the leader of hypocrites became furious and said to the multitude:-
``Our similitude with these emigrants conforms with the proverb that implies:-`Make your dog so fat as to eat you.' I swear by God that when we return to Medina our home town, those who are honourable and exalted, will expel those who are abased and abject. A young Moslim named; ZAID-IBN-ARGHAM, relayed what IBN-UBAI said to the prophet; and the Messenger of God inquired into the matter. IBN-UBAI seriously denied that and accused IBN-ARGHAM of being a liar!
Then, the son of IBN-UBAI who was a truthful believer heard of what his father had said; and that a group of Moslims had asked the prophet's permission to slay IBN-UBAI for his abuses and corrupt customs. He said to the Messenger of God:-``If you wish to kill my father for his strict and foolish enmity with God, please let me to fulfill your command, lest I get excited and take vengeance of the murderer of my father.''
The prophet answered:-``We are not thinking to slay your father. You too behave moderately with him as long as he is with us.''
The helpers in Medina received the Emigrants with favour and kindness. However, the hypocrites who were dreaming of the town's leadership did not like such a sincere entertainment, and encouraged the helpers to cease receiving them and spending for them, that they might stop coming to Medina any more.
This proves that the hypocrites must have had a poor mind and blind heart, and were not able to grasp the fact that the treasures of the heavens and the earth belong to Allah and when He intends to give; no one is able to withhold the unlimited Grace and Mercy of God.
Anyhow, the above verses were sent down in the above mentioned occasion and consist of ten signs and symptoms of hypocrisy and hypocrites as follows:-
1-They were liars.
2-They made a shield of their oaths.
3-Lack of apprehension and understanding.
4-They had a fine appearance.
5-They were stiff-necked stubborns like pieces of woods leaned to a wall.
6-They were always fearful and suspicious.
7-They mocked at the truth.
8-They were debauchers.
9-They thought too much of themselves, and being the owner of every thing.
10-They thought themselves to be reverend, and the others abased and object.
God is Compassionate and All-forgiving, and may even forgive the heinuous sin of hypocrisy, if the hypocrites sincerely repent and return. But in most cases, the hearts of such stiff-necked stubborn rejectors of truth are sealed, and they bar themselves from the infinite Mercy of God.
