Verse 1Verses 14-18

OCCASION OF REVELATION
Before the conquest of Mecca, some of the men of Quraish were converted, while their wives and children remaind unbelievers, and they had a conflict with the believing husband's religious convictions and duties. The man could not abandon his ideals for the request and desire of wife and children, although he had a tender love for them.
In the above passage, QurÌn instructs the man not to treat his wife and children harshly, nor recant.
The conflict was very serious when the man decided to leave the family and emigrate to Medina as per order of his prophet. They were thus advised to be patient and to forgive, overlook and pardon, their household for their anger and aversion, that, everything would be all right at the end.

YOUR CHILDREN AND WEALTH ARE TRIALS
VERSE NO. 14-18
``O, you who have believed, some of your wives and children are your enemies... And your children and wealth are trials for you.''
This kind of enmity might appear in the guise of love and affection, as it might be real enmity and hatred too.
The critical point is when a man reaches at the junction of two roads, one of which ends to Allah and His love and the other to the wife, children and wealth. Then, the man has one of two options to choose. Rare are those who choose their Lord in such cases!
On the other hand, children, wealth and wives are always some sort of a trial. This is due to their different ways of looking at matters; your fervent affection for them and their for you; Their conflict with your motives and their resistance are all to be counted for.
Also, hard is the case of separation from dearers and nearers. The separation from families and friends is one of the most distressful circumstances of our life, and yet it is sometimes a must for us to suffer it! Here is where a true believer should close his eyes painfully upon his wives and children, and open it hopefully to his Merciful Compassionate Lord.
The mutual affection may be a danger if it is based upon unworthy motives.
The instruction issued by Allah in such critical cases is:-
``Beware of Allah as much as you can, and give ear to the advices of your prophet and obey him, and also be charitable- such is the better way to be followed.'' In other word; it is to avoid evil and keep yourself aloof from sinful acts, and be obedient and follow God's commandments.
