Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 06)
Verses 1-5Verses 38-40

WOULD THAT I WERE DUST
VERSE NO. 38-40
Through the above verses; THAT GREAT DAY, has been described in brief:-
``The Day when the spirit and angels stans in line and keep quiet,...''
As to what or who the spirit might be, expounders of Quran differ. Some of them have understood it to be GABRIEL, the Arch angel of God, who is charged with bringing down the Message of God to human Messengers and prophet.
Some other commentators have taken the spirit to be souls of Man collectively as they rise to the court of the Final judgement.
Elsewhere in the Holy Quran (S 26:193) when the SPIRIT refers to GABRIEL, it has the adjective of ``HOLY'' to qualify the SPIRIT.
In S19:17, the SPIRIT is a especial power from God, that is breathed in the son of Man (JESUS CHRIST).
Then, it points to the great Day of Doom, which is sure to come, and truth will prevail, free of all kinds of falsehood:-
``That day is the Day of Truth...''
In that Day, Man will see the outcome of his deeds in this life of probation. There, in the Hereafter, his deeds will be personified in some appropriate form, and then stands in front of him.
When he observes his evil actions, he shall be full of grief and sorrow, and will exclaim:-``O? Would that I were dust! But it is too late then for seeking a remedy.
Therefore, whoever wishes may now take a way of return to his Merciful Lord.
