Question: What is the word of Sunnite scholars about the reliability of Hisham Ibn Ammar and accepting his quotations?
Answer: Abul Walid, Hisham Ibn Ammar Ibn Nasir Ibn Maysarah also called Zafari Damishqi.
He is the master of Bukhari for writing Sahih book. Ibn Qutaibah has counted him as one of the narrators of Shi'a; he has pointed to this in the "Al Firaq" chapter of Ma'arif book where he has mentioned the names of a group of Shi'a.
Zahabi has mentioned his name in the Mizanul I'tidal book [vol. 4, p. 302] and has introduced him as an imam, a preacher, a reader of the Holy Qur'an, a narrator, the scholar of Damascus, and a truthful man who knows many traditions and sometimes quotes some traditions which are not acceptable to some people, etc…
Bukhari has quoted tradition from him directly, in the chapter of "one who give a grace period to a poor debtor ", in the part of selling and dealing "Bai' Wa Mu'amilah" of his Sahih book, and in some other parts that researchers know it. I suppose that some of those cases are available in the Maghazi (Battles) book, in the Beverages book and in the chapter of the virtues of the companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.). He quotes tradition from Yahya Ibn Hamza, Sadaqah Ibn Khalid, Abdul Hamid Ibn Abil Ishrin, etc…
Zahabi has said in the Mizanul I'tidal book that: Many people came to him to learn the recitation of the Holy Qur'an and tradition and they quote tradition from him. Walid Ibn Muslim, one of his students, quotes tradition from him.
He quotes tradition from Abu Luhai'ah with permission.
Abdan has said that: "no one can equal him in this world" and another one says that: "Hisham was an eloquent, intelligent and a knowledgeable… man.
Like other Shi'a, he believed that the words of the Holy Qur'an have been created by the Almighty God; it means that the same words have been revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). When Ahmad was informed of this belief, said that: -As mentioned in the biography of Hisham ,in Mizanul I'tidal book, -"I found him as a dull and stupid person, May God kill him."
Ahmad found a writing of Hisham which began in this way :
«اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ الَّذِى تَجَلّى لِخَلْقِهِ بِخَلْقِهِ»
"Praise is to God Who made His creatures aware of His Existence by His creation."
Ahmad stood up and sat down, and then he ordered those who had performed prayer behind Hisham to repeat it. Although the saying of Hisham includes admiring the Essence of God, excepting Him from having quality and place and praising the signs of His creation which are clear facts for well-informed people, because his saying is not only equal to this saying but is more impressive than this "And there is a sign of Allah in every thing." «وَ فِى کُلِّ شَىْء لَهُ آیَةٌ», contemporary scholars speaks about each other according to their independent reasoning.
Hisham was born in the year 153 A.H. and passed away in the end of Muharram, in the year 245 A.H. May God bless his soul.1
