What was the Meaning of the Title ‘Umm Abīhā’ that was given to the Lady Fāṭimah (‘a)?

Question: Why was the title Umm Abīhā given to the Lady Fāṭimah (‘a)?
Concise answer:
Detailed answer: During the time of the Prophet (ṣ), it was customary amongst the Arabs that in addition to a name, a Kunyah (a title) was also s e l e c ted by them. If the individual was a man, the title would begin with Abb and if it was a woman it would begin with Umm. Amongst the traditions in regards to the titles of the Lady Fāṭimah (‘a) is an amazing title which delves into the reality of who this lady really was. The following tradition is found in Asad al-Ghābah and it states: The Kunyah of Fāṭimah was Umm Abīhā (the mother of her father).[1] A similar tradition has also been narrated in the book Istī‘āb as well.[2]

This is a title which no one else possessed in the history of Islam and it shows the special position of Fāṭimah (‘a) in relation to her father; it shows that she loved her father so much that it was as if she was a mother to him. We know that the Prophet (ṣ) lost his own mother while he was a child and Fāṭimah loved her father dearly from a very young age. She was a loving and self sacrificing daughter to such a high degree that she was given this unique title and she is the only woman in Islam to have carried it.[3]
